HOLINESS IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Once I get a full view of this earthly life, I will see how all-important a part God plays in it. Instead of living for the moment or for the next few years, I will live for my highest and most important goal. I will see the unending importance of what I am doing today, I will understand how each act of this day helps me become a little more ready for heaven. Only sin is foolish. Only sin is bad. All else is good and pleasing to God because it helps me in one way or another.

Only in God will my soul be at rest,

ANIMALS DO FEEL HOMESICK TOO!

If they could only speak, they would probably ask us to let them go back where they belong. Animals are really helpless because they can't do what we humans can do. Like overseas contract workers, they feel homesick, too!

Two giant pandas, goodwill gifts from China to political rival Taiwan, are losing weight since their arrival on the island last week because of a different diet and lack of exercise. Tuan Tuan, the male panda, had shed about 2 kilos, and female Yuan Yuan shed nearly 3 kilos, as the natives of the fog-shrouded mountains of China grappled with Taiwan's bamboo shoots and smaller living space.

IF YOU CARE FOR YOUR CHILD

A traffic accident left a girl paralyzed for life. The accident shouldn't have been so serious had she been in a properly installed restraint, she probably would have been uninjured.



Every year thousands of infants and children are killed or maimed in car accidents. Many of these deaths and injuries could be prevented by the regular use of a child restraint device. Unfortunately, too many parents fail to realize the necessity of these devices--until it's too late.

Child restraints should be used from the first days of an infant's life. They must be used properly; all straps and belts must be secured, and the child must be positioned properly in the restraint. Many of the restraints on the market are designed for a specific child weight. Unless your child restraint is adaptable for several ages, you may have to invest more than one restraint.

THE BLAST FROM BEHIND

Few of us have not been victims of the impatient, arrogant driver who feels we are not driving as fast as he would wish us to. Few of us have been first at a red light and not heard the impatient blast from behind, the instant the signal turns to green. And few of us have been spared a rude honk--and sometimes an accompanying shaking first--from a driver who simply cannot share the road with anyone else. Using horn to make a rude statement reflecting your personal impatience does nothing to improve "road relations." When tempted to urge a slower driver with a horn blast--curb the instinct if you can.

On the other hand, using the horn judiciously can make its use more effective and will alert others (drivers as well as pedestrians) to a truly dangerous situation. When you hear horns honking constantly and with little reason, the tendency is to "tune out" the unwanted noise. But when drivers cooperate to use the horn only as a signal of some sort--a real warning sound--the horn becomes an important safety device.

OPEN DOOR IN MUSIC

A young piano student is so eager to start with his new lesson, Prelude No. 7 in A Major, Opus. 28/7, one of the finest short piano solo compositions by Frederic Francois Chopin.


Chopin is the open door in music. He is not only the poet of pianoforte, he is the poet of music, the most poetic composer. Chopin will always be Chopin, whether his poetry is apprehended by the pianist or not. He neither preaches nor paints; yet his art is decorative and dramatic--in the climate of ideal. His music sounds all the better; the listener is not pinned down to any precise mood, the music being allowed to work its particular charm without the aid of literary crutches for unimaginative minds.

The Korean women--called ama--who harvest shellfish by diving without diving gear into the sea, subject themselves daily to a greater cold stress than any other people.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

In a recent freak accident, a woman motorist was choked to death as she poured water into her radiator. Her scarf got entangled in the running engine fan and she was unable to extricate herself. Even though it seems unlikely, accidents like this do happen. In fact a similar accident happened here in Saudi Arabia with a motorist whose gutra got caught in the fan. Fortunately, the man was not killed, but he suffered severe cuts to his face.

To avoid this risk, do not add coolant to your car engine while it is running. Turn the engine off and allow it to cool completely before adding coolant. This will also avoid the risk of cracking the engine block by adding cold fluid to a hot engine.

MEANINGFUL PHRASES

In our reading we will meet not only single words and phrases and sometimes sentences taken from mythology, phrases whose full meaning is not revealed unless you take a look behind the mythological curtain.

What does the phrase, "sulk like Achilles in his tent" mean?


During the siege of Troy, Achilles, the greatest of all the Greek heroes, refused to fight because of a quarrel with his leader Agamemnon who had taken away a captive girl awarded to Achilles. Achilles withdrew to his tent and didn't go out to fight until after the death of his friend Patroclus. The phrase means to refuse to participate in an important undertaking because of personal grievances.

How about "the labors of Hercules," what does it mean?


These are superhuman labors and herculean is a word used to describe a superhuman strength. Hercules was sentenced by Apollo to perform twelve labors of extraordinary difficulty.

A BRAVE WOMAN!

Ever heard of a woman fighting off a wild beast with a machete?

A woman fought a 500-pound lion with a machete and scared it away. She and her seven-year old niece were riding a donkey along a road when the lion went after the animal's legs. The woman said, she found the courage to fight the lion because she thought it would attack her niece. She hit the animal with a machete until the beast ran away. The lion had escaped from a private zoo. It already killed two dogs and ate a pig before it was sedated and taken back to the zoo.

She's an ideal woman who demonstrates bravery and courage in the face of challenges.

TWO VIRTUES

Patience will help us to keep calm in our troubles and difficulties. It will help us think more clearly. As a result, we shall find it easier to turn to God when we need Him.

Humility will help us admit our weaknesses and nothingness. It will make us less irritable and resentful of our distasteful experiences.

These two virtues will us have peace in the middle of our troubles. Then with a definite plan in mind, we can proceed against our faults and conquer our temptations.

THE BLIND GENIUS

Two hundred years ago today...

Nearly 200 years after the birth of Louis Braille, the alphabet of raised dots he created to overcome his lack of sight continues to touch the lives of blind people everywhere. Braille was born on January 4, 1809, near Paris.

The son of a saddler, he injured his eye with an awl when he was three years old. The resulting infection spread to both eyes and he was soon blind. Despite his blindness, he continued to attend a regular village school until the age of 10, when he enrolled at the Royal Institution for Blind Youth in Paris. There, while his fellow students slept, he began punching dots into soft wood to create an alphabet.

A DISASTROUS WEDDING

Strange News from Abroad

A wedding reception ended in a pandemonium and the divorce of the newly wed couple over a dispute on whether or not there should be musical instruments at the reception. The mothers of both the bride and groom had agreed that singers would not play any string instruments. Nevertheless, the bride's mother secretly paid a songstress to give a violin performance after her initial song, which was accompanied with a traditional duff. When the singer started playing the violin, the groom's mother exploded with rage and began abusing the bride's mother. The argument led to a physical fight between the two women with other guests jumping in.

Peace, was however, restored after the intervention of several guests. Nevertheless, the still angry mother of the groom ordered her son to pronounce divorce, which he immediately did.

Her name is Han Mi Ok, a Korean celebrity who became known as 'Fan Lady' after her disastrous cosmetic surgery. She underwent 15 reconstructive surgery to overhaul her 'I-don't-think-it-can-be-fix' plastic surgery damage. She apparently became addicted to plastic surgery and couldn't get enough of the 'faux-fect face' (the author of this article made the word up), so she went to quacks just to indulge herself. She even personally performed a facial injection at home. The result.... well you can see it.

Her courage to display her damaged face in public and let people see how ungodly it is to distort ones appearance is admirable.

She should serve as a lesson to anyone who dreamed of having a 'faux-fect face'. Think twice before you get cut up and think thrice before you inject yourself with human byproducts.
