The great tenor Enrico Caruso was performing in San Francisco on April 17, 1906. when the famous earthquake occurred. The terrified tenor took just one thing from his shattered room, a picture of President Theodore Roosevelt, personally autographed to Caruso. Later, when he tried to get on a train with the other members of the opera company, the guards didn't recognize him and wouldn't let him pass. But Caruso showed them his treasured picture, was issued a boarding pass, and made his way to safety.
